The Story Behind Us

How we began.

7th Grain started in 2012 as a two-bench workshop off Amrita Lane in Edappally, taking on the joinery other shops turned down — a bed that had to fit a room with three doors, a dining table for a family of nine. Word travelled the way it does in Kochi, through the people we built for. We still take that work, and the benches have gone from two to nineteen.

What we value.

Solid wood, cut joints and finishes that can be repaired rather than replaced. We quote what a piece costs to make properly and will say when a brief is not worth building. Nothing leaves the workshop that we would not put in our own homes, and everything we make can be brought back to us to be mended.

How we work

  • Material Sourcing

We buy standing timber and kiln-dry it ourselves — teak, oak, walnut and plantation rubberwood, chosen board by board for grain and moisture before anything is cut.

  • Wood Working

Every joint is cut to fit rather than fastened over: mortise and tenon, dovetail, and draw-bored pegs, so a piece holds together through decades of Kerala humidity.

  • Polishing

Finishes are built in thin coats and cut back by hand between each one, ending in a surface you can feel the grain through rather than a film sitting on top of it.
